The Government also advised that from April, youth justice custodial services, community based youth justice and youth justice policy will be overseen by the Department of Justice and Regulation.
This announcement builds on work already underway to improve Victoria’s youth justice system.
The new facility on a preferred site on Hoppers Lane in Werribee will be the most secure youth justice facility Victoria has ever had and has been designed according to best practice.
The 224-bed facility will feature the latest security equipment to support the safety of staff and the community, the rehabilitation of young people and reduce the likelihood of reoffending.
This project will provide a significant economic boost to the region, creating up to 3000 construction and related jobs with an estimated economic benefit of almost $420 million for Wyndham City.
An additional 450 jobs will be brought into the area, and there will be substantial opportunities for regional businesses when the facility opens in 2020.
The Government will work closely with Wyndham City Council on the preferred site, with local residents to provide input into the design of the facility and the construction process. Community information sessions will be held for people in the local area, to keep them informed about the project.
A dedicated information line has been set up on 1800 630 738. The line will be available from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
